The event of the year for lovers of running and mountain sports
The Gorbeia Suzien is one of the most waited for events for mountain sports lovers.
Runners and trail runners from all over Spain and part of Europe come together every year to this event that joins together two passions: sports and nature in its pure state.
This year the Gorbeia Suzien celebrates its seventh edition with great enthusiasm, after a 2018 in which this long-awaited event, both by the athletes and by the residents of the town of Zeanuri, could not be celebrated.
From the Hotel Ellauri we want to invite you to get to know one of the most spectacular and expected mountain races of the year. From 27th to 29th September you have an appointment with us at Gorbeia Suzien.
What is the Gorbeia Suzien?
Gorbeia Suzien is a mountain race whose origin comes from a group of athletes and runners from the area who had a common dream: to make public one of the most beautiful places in the Basque Country.
Joined by their passion for sport and nature, the group begins little by little to shape this sporting event, whose first edition took place in 2012.
“We chose Gorbeia because we live in here. We are fortunate to be part of this wonderful natural place and wanted to be able to make it known to the rest of the world. “
This peculiar race in its two modalities «mountain race and vertical kilometer», starts in the village of Zeanuri,</ strong> and after running for several summits, crossing part of the natural landscapes of the Natural Park of Gorbeia, returns again to its starting point.

This beautiful village is located in the Valley of Arratia,</ Strong> at the foot of Mount Gorbeia. It is the third largest municipality in Bizkaia, with a population of around 1200 inhabitants.
The Gorbeia Suzien is one of the most waited for sporting events of the year and all the neighbors celebrate it “taking the streets” to encourage the athletes with great passion.
Thanks to the close collaboration between all the residents of the town of Zeanuri, the event was held during six consecutive years (2012 – 2017).
In 2018 this race could not be held (for different reasons) according to the organization. This year the event that both runners and mountain lovers expect with great enthusiasm returns with much more strength.
Gorbeia Suzien’s categories
The Gorbeia Suzien is divided mainly into two categories: Mountain Race and Vertical Kilometer.
Mountain race
The mountain race will take place on September 29th, 2019.
With a total distance of 31 km, a gradient of about 2,400 meters and a maximum time of 6 hours and 30 min to carry it out.
The tour departs from the town of Zeanuri (Bizkaia), entering directly into the Gorbeia Natural Park from the hermitage of San Justo.
After overcoming the first slopes, the runners will enter directly through the different regions of the area: Zamburu, the summits of Lekanda or Zastegi up to the top of the Gorbeia, down again to the outskirts of Azero to go back up to the Aldamin summit.
The mountain race ends at the same starting point.

Vertical Kilometer
The Vertical Kilometer will take place on September 27th, 2019.
With a distance of 4.2 Kilometers, a drop of 1,000 meters and a maximum time of 2 hours and 30 minutes to carry it out, this test is only suitable for very experienced trainers.
Starting from the town of Zeanuri (Bizkaia), the vertical kilometer takes place in the surroundings of the Gorbeia Natural Park, entering through the hermitage of San Justo.
A terrain with very steep slopes, which finds its highest peak at the summit of Lekanda, where the test goal is located.
To access it, runners will have to overcome a channel with a small climb that will take them directly to the last slope and also the hardest to the finish line.
